A combination of gospel,
rhythm and blues, soul music began in the 1940's, but became hugely popular in the 1960's. Ray Charles (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ray_Charles) is often thought of as the inventor of the genre, with hit after hit, beginning with 'I Got A Woman', released in 1954. Other influential soul atrists include Aretha Franklin, Billy Paul, James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Soul II Soul and Stevie Wonder. Unfortunately, the 80's, although a great time for pop music, brought in something i despise...hip hop. Some soul artists were, regrettably, corrupted by this. However, there are soem great modern soul artists today, including Seal and Asa.
Different styles of soul are still around, these include:
- Mowtown Soul (recommended song- "I Want You Back" Jackson 5)
- Deep Soul (recommended song- "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag" James Brown)
- Memphis Soul (recommended song- "Mustang Sally" Wilson Pickett)
- New Orleans Soul (recommended song- "Working In The Coal Mine" Lee Dorsey)
- Philadelphia Soul (recommended song- "Me and Mrs. Jones" Billy Paul)
- Phsycadelic Soul (recommended song- "September" Earth, Wind & Fire)
- Blue Eyed Soul (recommended song- "Spoiled" Joss Stone)
- Neo Soul (recommended song- "Jailer" Asa)
Oh, don't you love it so??
Comment if there are any other genres you want me to blog about, or if you have any other soul suggestions.
xoxo.
